Your Weather this Week
For Today will see a chance for severe weather in the north, around Minneapolis and stretching down through the plains. Be weather aware as these storms might contain hail and high winds.

As the week continues, the south and east will see a chance of rain midweek while the west stays mostly dry.

The Ponies
Kentucky Derby: Who’s a Mudder
The thoroughbreds gearing up for this weekend’s Kentucky Derby might secretly be hoping for a little rain. Churchill Downs has seen some famously soggy Derbies (2018 set the bar for one of the “sloppiest” tracks ever), and a few horses are actually better when racing in the mud. In fact, forecasts hint at rain before the big race, which could leave the track wet and give an edge to “mudders” – those horses bred to splash through muck. Don’t be surprised if you see jockeys swapping stylish shades for goggles; a bit of well-timed rainfall could turn the “Run for the Roses” into the “Run for the Rubber Boots,” and at least one long-shot horse might literally find its stride in the sludge.
Horses, pole position and their odds.

Coal Battle and Luxor Cafe could be ones to watch if the track is muddy. With rain chances in Louisville, Kentucky all week, the track could give these horses an edge. However, Saturday May 3rd (race day) looks to be an absolutely fantastic day at the races.

Drought Watch
Who got rain and who didn’t!
As we enter the least week of April, here is a recap of the rain that we got across the country, and a check on the Drought Monitor. The south received some impressive rainfall this April with places like Memphis TN, receiving over 12 inches of rain. Their average is just above 5 inches.

The drought map for last week is showing the southern parts of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona are still in need of a some precipitation.

Barometric Beats
New Artist Preview: Pippa Crossland talking about Weather Warnings. We especially like the electric guitar like picking that drives through the song. Reminds us a little of the sound of rain hitting a tin roof. Enjoy!
